Many applications of artificial vision require a full view of an object's surface to analyze features on the sides rather than the top.

The goal for each application is to inspect as large an area of the object as possible, using a limited number of cameras. This creates the need for lenses capable of capturing large areas of the target with a single camera. Additionally, surface images from above or the bottom of a container can be combined.
Most cylindrical objects, such as bottles and various containers, as well as many types of mechanical parts, require inspection of their side surfaces to detect scratches and impurities, read barcodes, or verify that certain text has been printed correctly. In cases like these, the most common approach is to use multiple cameras (usually 3 or 4) to obtain different side views of the part being inspected in addition to the standard top view. This solution increases the cost of the application and limits system performance.
The acquired image will be composed of multiple individual images of each view, so that the vision software can process it in its entirety. The image composition depends on the number of possible views given by the type of lens chosen.
